What is a podcast?

A podcast is audio or video media that can be downloaded with notifications served via Atom or RSS feed.� The time-shifting aspect, the automatic notification aspects of a podcast are important parts of what makes a podcast what it is.� However, this does not limit the distribution model.� Direct download, streaming, and other methods can be used IN ADDITION to the syndicated feeds.

With that in mind, an audio podcast really should be either made available in a variety of file formats to suit the end user OR in mp3 format.� MP3 is the de facto standard and, on a personal level, it PISSES ME OFF when I’m trying to check out a podcast and it is in some non-standard file format that I cannot access on ALL of my playback means.� It is rude and, generally speaking, marks a podcast that I will not listen to.

Video podcasts are more of a pain to deal with.� There is no standard and you have to deal with matching up codecs and enclosures and … It is a pain.� A polite video podcast will make a number of options available to suit the end user.� For an excellent example of this, check out the video podcasts at Revision3.

How do I listen to a podcast?

Well, pretty much any way that you want to.� It is one of the things that make podcasts so awesome.� You can play them on your personal computer in any media player. You can transfer them onto thumb drives and memory cards and play them back on some TVs and digital picture frames. Best of all, you can load an MP3 podcast onto any portable media player worth its snot and take your podcasts with you where ever you go.

How do I subscribe to podcasts?

You’ll need a feed reader or a more specialized podcatcher.� I hate to say it, but at this point in time, if you want the easiest route to keeping up with your favorite podcasts, you’ll want to get one of the big boys; an iPod with iTunes, or a Zune with… uh… Zune.� There are other options.� For more information on some of these other options, check out my “Search for the King” series of podcatcher reviews.
