Learning D&D 4E, part I

Posted by Nomad Scry On June - 25 - 2008

I am finally up to page 26 of the 4E Player’s Handbook.  And so far it feels like a fun and simplified way to get new players and new DMs into the game and running faster than ever before.

It also feels more like a combat simulator/strategy game than like actual role-playing.

Isn’t it cute how they renamed the Bard class to Warlord?  I can actually imagine people wanting to play the class now that it doesn’t bring up burning nightmares of bad poetry.

Maegia

Posted by Nomad Scry On April - 15 - 2008

I’ve been playing Maegia with elegiac for a while now. He’s made it up to the top five and I had wormed my way up to 35 at one point.

Until today. When I logged in and found that I had suddenly:

You have been accepted into the Naked Nerds Alliance !     15/04 - 09h41

Of course… I hadn’t done any of that. Someone “hacked” my account and used it to join the Naked Nerds Alliance. Why? Hell if I know. I guess it was really my fault for assuming that no one would care enough to actually bother even attempting to screw with my piddling character.

The problem is that game of Maegia does not yet support the option to quit a quild once you have joined. So I deleted my character.

Then I made a new character. Exactly the same as before. Ha. I win!

Heh.  Thots return to market.  I crack myself up.  Yes, that’s right, Thotmarket is once again in a open to the public beta.  I’ve logged in for a grand total of five minutes, but it is looking more stable than the last time I spent time there.

In other good news, the IE8 team has either fallen under the pressure of the web elite… nah, they must have realized that the previous plan of standards implementation was simply “naf.”  So now, when IE8 goes into standards mode, it will work the way that standards mode does.  Which is too say, it will do it’s best to interpret and display the page according to STANDARDS.  Way to go Microsoft.

Unfortunately, I also wanted to mention that Gary Gygax passed away today.  I’m kinda bummed about it.  From everything I’ve heard about him, he was a real ass.  The few podcasts I heard with him seem to reinforce that notion.  And I don’t even mean the kind of jerk that I look up to usually, this was beyond that.  And yet, somehow, I had it in the back of mind that I was going to meet up with him someday.  You know, in the dream world where I am a successful fantasy author making rpg supplements and hanging out with the big boys of the geek world.  And so I am saddened to hear that he is gone now.

R.I.P. Mr. Gygax.  My life would be a very different thing if it weren’t for you and Arnebeck.

Ilithids are being made

Posted by Nomad Scry On February - 20 - 2008

I had to share this one.  Kotaku is reporting that Emotiv is going to be releasing Epoc for $300 around Christmas time this year.  Who cares?  Anyone who wants to pretend to be an Ilithid.  All cyberpunk junkies.  Iron Man wannabes.  This is totally cool… and really creapy.

It is basically a scary helmet that detects, ”

[T]he electrical current conducted by the brain and transmits the data to an in-board chip that deciphers the information and translates it into data that can be used by the program to control games. “

I remember hearing about this device last year, when it sorta worked some of the time for some of the various people reporting on it.  Now, it has apparently grown up some,

evolv[ing] to be able to detect a range of brain activity [...] using the data to detect facial expression, mood and, to some degree, simple thought.

The other other Barracuda

Posted by Nomad Scry On January - 23 - 2008

A few months ago I, sucker that I am, picked up another pair of “gaming” headphones.  This particular pair is from Razer, the same company that makes all the gaming mice and my personal favorite pair of earbuds (m100.)  I was pretty impressed with the Barracuda HP-1 and their purported 5.1 surround sound… although my use has been practically nill.  I haven’t even had all of the wires plugged in yet.

What I did notice though, was the clean sound and clear distinction between the rear and center channels.  (Those particular channels only because those are the only ones that I plugged in.)  I thought that the odd DVI-style connector was a bit odd, but chalked that up to a failed entry into the sound card market.

Then I found the Barracuda AC-1 Gaming Audio Card at either Best Buy or CompUSA.  For just under $200!  Ack!

And today, w00t! has a new one for less than $70.  New!  Anyone want to lend me some money?  Donate?  I’ll do odd jobs!  Wanna buy a used hat?  Ummmmm, please!?

The new Duke Nukem!

Posted by Nomad Scry On January - 15 - 2008

This just in from Kotaku:

Breaking: Super Smash Bros. Brawl Officially Delayed

Now, I might be remembering this incorrectly, but wasn’t this game supposed to have been one of the launch titles over a year ago? Just this weekend I was telling my wife that there was no way that this game was going to hit its launch date. Now I’m wondering if Smash Bros. will make it out for next holiday season, or if it really is going to be the next Duke Nukem, taking 10+ years to come out.

Oh wait, Duke Nukem Forever hasn’t come out yet. It is still just vapor ware. And so is Smash Bros.
