Secret Rooms

Posted by Nomad Scry On November - 26 - 2008

I ran across a posting from the Steam Punk Home about Holly Black’s Hidden Library yesterday. I definitely recommend checking out the photos of Ms. Black’s wonderful secret library.

The wonderful bookcase door was custom made by The Hidden Door Company. Beautiful work, but the price puts it way out of my range. They have a clearance priced demo model listed on the front page right now that is going for $4000! I’m sure that is an excellent value for the work done, but I tend to look at the doors at Home Depot and think that they are expensive.

A cheaper method of putting in a secret library might be to follow the design on Instructables for a Hidden Door Bookshelf. I don’t see a price sheet for this project, but it actually looks like something someone with a moderate hacker attitude could do. In fact… well, no. I don’t think Jade or my landlord would appreciate it if I started putting up secret doors all over. Would be fun though!

All of this poking around brought a Hidden Room story to my attention. A family in Greenville, South Carolina found a secret room in the house that they had just bought.  In the room was a note that basically said “Surprise! This house is going to kill you now!” A former owner of the house had hidden a note in the secret room warning future owners that the house was infested with killer “Black Mold.” Go read the story for yourself, it’s a doozy!
