Marriage is for breeders?

I’m personally of the opinion that it isn’t any of my business what you do in your home.  As long as it doesn’t harm me, why should I care.  That attitude defines why I support Same Sex Marriage.

I’ve seen some interesting conversations about the topic.  Some of the time I have to admit that the person arguing against SSM isn’t a complete moron, that they are at most a close-minded bigot.  (Though I have a real hard time not yelling “IDIOT” everytime they say something intelligent and WRONG WRONG WRONG.)

Today, I read what is probably going to be the only semi-sane arguement against SSM.  It included some spurious arguements, trying to say that NAMBLA is for SSM ‘cuz it opens the door… I don’t think it is valid to make that leap.  On the other hand, SSM could lead to legal polyamory or even legal incest.  Eventually, down the road (OVERDRIVE), I suppose that is an eventual outcome.

And I shrug at that outcome.  [ shrug ]  Doesn’t hurt me.  Do what you want.

But the arguement is based on the idea that marriage is for the purpose of making and raising children.  To which I have two counter thoughts.  Well, maybe three.

The first and simplistic is BUNK! If that were the case then sterile people wouldn’t be allowed to wed.  The elderly and the disabled shouldn’t be allowed to get married.

Secondly… seriously, do we need to make more people?  Really?  We haven’t destroyed enough of the planet making food and homes and places to play?  The world is going to hell in a hand basket, it has been since before I was born, and it is marching it’s way down that road to this day.  I have NO hope for the future of humanity.  Not if one of the goals of society is to continue to produce MORE humans.  Gah!

And finally, I was married once.  I did it because it was the right thing to do.  I had a baby coming and she needed a mommy and a daddy.  A real mommy and daddy at that, the married kind.  That was a freaking disaster.  And most of the time, it is.  Getting married because you’ve been a moron and made a new human is a pretty sure fire way to make your life miserable.  And it’d take a truly stupid child to not be made miserable simply through your own miserableness.

If that’s a word.

The Catholic notion that sex is for making babies (grin and bear it) and that sperm are living people and that birth control is wrong… yeah, that’s stupid.  It is as stupid as thinking that goverment and society in general need to be in the business of making new people.

We have enough, already.  How about we start taking care of the earth (and ourselves) instead of just trying to coat it in a thick and deadly crust of humans?  Let me quote Agent Smith here:

I’d like to share a revelation that I’ve had, during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you aren’t actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with its surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply, and multiply until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You are a plague, and we… are the cure. – The Matrix

I don’t know what the cure is. I’m pretty sure we are the virus.

For another point of view, one that I found very informative, check out Molly Woods blog entry on the subject of Prop 8.
