Two BIG hours

Posted by Nomad Scry On October - 28 - 2008

I am working a slightly different shift for the next month or so. Instead of going to work for 11pm, I’ll be starting two hours earlier. So far, I have not been able to actually make it to work on time since making the change. I keep saying, “You wouldn’t think two hours would make such a big difference.”

I was working on some character notes for my NaNoWriMo story and realized that not only do I have no idea what my middle or end are going to be, I don’t have interesting characters. I’m starting to get the feeling I should just chuck the current idea and wing it. Just pull the whole thing outta my butt.

For geek factor, I’m posting ths from my Tilt. It ain’t no EEE, but it is pretty nifty.

Random Links

Posted by Nomad Scry On October - 25 - 2008

I’ve been emailing myself links with the intention of either doing more research or posting them up here. So far, I’ve not actually followed through on perhaps 90% of them. So, in order to help clear out my inbox, I am simply going to push them up now with little to no comment. Here goes.

  • Study hints that fruit flies have free will
  • Two important points here. One is this awesome quote:

“Free will is essentially an oxymoron — we would not consider it ‘will’ if it were completely random and we would not consider it ‘free’ if it were entirely determined,” Brembs said.

And the other is that the fruit flies, in the absence of normal ques, seemed to demonstrate behavior matching up to something called Levy’s Distribution. I don’t know enough to really comment, but it looks like this points to a possible precursor to “free will”.

Does free will equate to sentience?

The Myth of Property & Ownership

Posted by Nomad Scry On October - 22 - 2008

[these thoughts are still fetal and are rather incoherent]

I don’t really want to get into the ridiculous anarchist idea that PROPERTY = THEFT.  Unfortunately, I may end up getting there.

I was listening to the Cato Daily Podcast yesterday about Intellectual Property and something that the guest said made me think about how the idea of American freedom that I picked up as a child was that when I grew up I could buy property and do whatever I wanted there.  It would be my sovereign land.  I always thought that I would be free to do whatever I wanted, including dropping off the face of the earth.

    BABY TIGER!

BABY TIGER!, originally uploaded by chrisgrant.

    It’s like a baby kitty, but it’s a tiger… so it’s cute AND deadly!

    That’s my favorite combo ever.

    very tired

I thought I lost BrainWyrms today and everything on it.

I have a backup that I made a month ago, but everything after that… nothing.

So I was really really relieved when I finally found the right question to ask, and found out that all I needed to do was re-initiate the DNS settings for BrainWyrms.

I now have a current backup of BrainWyrms. Yeah… I don’t need to do this again any time soon. I wasted my entire shift at work and most of my day at home worrying myself sick over it.

Have a nice day folks, and don’t forget to back it up.

Podcatcher: The Search for the King part 3 - FeedReader

Posted by Nomad Scry On October - 13 - 2008

FeedReader is pretty. It is slick and it gives off the feeling that it should be everything that I want it be. In fact, it looks so much like it should be what I need that I wasted a significant amount of time trying to find missing functionality just because I believed it should be there.

    RockBox’ing the iRiver H10

Posted by Nomad Scry On October - 12 - 2008

    Yesterday:

iRiver H10… on malformed RockBox… might have been wonderful if I hadn’t deleted the vital files from the H10… in an aborted attempt to remove a botched install. Of course, I wasn’t wise enough to have backed up the original files on the H10, so now the whole thing is just a funny looking protable hard drive.

What really bothers me is that no one else seems to have backed them up either. And iRiver doesn’t seem to have the repair thing available anymore.

    le sigh.
